The West Is Degraded, Only Russia Can Help, Say Mideast Christians

By Martin Roth

With the “degraded” West offering no assistance, Middle East Christians are saying that only one country will help them in their current plight – Russia.

That is the message from Dmitry Pakhomov, one of the executives of Christian Solidarity Worldwide.

His remarks are available at the website of the Vestnik Kavkaza news organization here, made at a press conference that seems to have been attended mainly by a small number of extremely beautiful young women.

Here is a little of what he had to say:

“For the past few years I have been engaged in the increasing problem of the persecution of Christians, motivated by religious hatred in the Arab world. Last year I visited the Arab Republic of Syria and I have seen first-hand the destruction of Christian churches and monasteries.

“During our meeting with our Lebanese friends they pointed to the following: modern West, modern Western civilization is rapidly degrading. The Maronite church, for example, has always relied on the support of France. So, in the words of Cardinal Bechara Boutros al-Rai, the West has now ceased to support the Christians of the Middle East, especially since in France, he said, the situation of religious freedom is very bad, due to the fact that a law was passed to legalize same-sex marriage, and Christians were against this. Francois Hollande, the president, spoke rather as an opponent of the position of Christians.

“Accordingly, he said now the only hope is for Russia, the Russian Orthodox church. According to him, Russia is the only country in the world that is quick to respond to all of the events in the Middle East related to the harassment of Christians.”

Mr Pakhomov said he was forming a delegation of Russian and Ukrainian political leaders to travel to Lebanon and Syria.

In addition, he said that Christians had created a new organization, Christian Defense, “to help Christians here in Russia, at all levels,” including Christian refugees in the country.
